What are the benefits of using ciao?
The ciao app provides a simple and flexible way to travel throughout the VOR region.
Before starting your journey, just check in – the app automatically records your trip using GPS and Bluetooth. After checking out, the correct fare is calculated for you. Once the daily fare cap is reached, the day ticket rate is applied automatically instead of multiple single fares. This ensures that you are always traveling with the right ticket. The app continuously determines the most cost-effective fare, so there is no need for manual ticket selection.
Another convenient feature is the "third party payment" option: users can easily provide a mobility budget to others directly in the app, which can then be used anywhere within the VOR network. This makes traveling even more flexible and community-friendly.
The ciao app can be used across the entire VOR region, with the exception of demand-responsive taxis. Existing season tickets can be stored digitally in the app, and you can add up to twelve accompanying passengers as well as dogs to your journey.
What are the technical requirements for using the ciao app?
The ciao app is compatible with all smartphones running iOS 13.0 or later, or Android 9.0 or later, and can be downloaded free of charge from the App Store or Google Play Store.
For optimal performance, location services (GPS) and Bluetooth must be enabled on your smartphone. The app also requires the necessary permissions to access location and Bluetooth data.
Please ensure that an active internet connection via mobile data or Wi-Fi is available while using the app.
How do I create a customer profile?
In order to use ciao, you need to create a customer account.
Follow these steps to create a profile within the app:
- Download and open the app.
- Tap the profile icon and select "Register".
- Enter your email address, password, name, and date of birth.
- Read and accept the Terms and Conditions.
- Tap "Create an account".
- Confirm your email address by clicking the verification link.
- Enter your address details – your account is now active.
Where can I use ciao?
The ciao app can be used in Vienna, Lower Austria, and Burgenland (the VOR region) on all public transport services, except for demand-responsive taxis (Anrufsammeltaxis), tourist transport services, and the City Airport Train (CAT).
For journeys extending to Upper Austria, Styria, or neighbouring countries, the ciao ticket is valid up to the last scheduled stop within the VOR region. Please ensure that you purchase a valid ticket for the onward section of your journey in good time – either before departure or at the latest upon reaching the final scheduled stop within the VOR area.
How is a trip defined in the ciao app?
A trip refers to a continuous journey on public transport within the applicable validity period and area, in one direction. Changing between lines or modes of transport is permitted, but interruptions are not allowed.
How should I proceed during a ticket inspection?
In the event of a ticket inspection, please present the ciao ticket displayed in the app.
If you have stored season tickets or any required eligibility documents, these must also be presented as indicated on your ciao ticket.
Please also note that even after reaching the daily fare cap and receiving a day ticket, you must continue to check in and check out for every journey. Otherwise, no valid travel authorisation can be shown. The ciao system can only determine after a journey has ended whether the existing ticket fully covers the distance travelled.
Can I use ciao for Park & Ride?
At present, the use of the Park & Ride access system with ciao is not yet available.

Where can I change or update my personal information?
You can update your personal information at any time in your profile within the ciao app.
How can I delete my account?
You can delete your ciao customer account directly in the ciao app.

Which data are stored when using the ciao app?
In addition to your profile data, travel information is stored from the time of check-in until check-out. All single and day tickets purchased via ciao, as well as the corresponding billing data, are also recorded.The data is automatically deleted after three months, except for profile data and information required for invoicing purposes.
Is data collected when the app is not in use?
No. ciao only stores travel data from the time of check-in until check-out.
No data is collected when the app is not actively in use.
Who has access to my data?
The partner organizations Verkehrsverbund Ost-Region (VOR), Wiener Linien, and Wiener Lokalbahnen have access to your data.
Billing and Payment
Which payment methods are supported?
A valid credit or debit card is required.
To verify your card, a temporary charge of €1 will be withdrawn from your bank account.
This amount is automatically refunded immediately, ensuring that no costs are incurred.
How much does a trip cost, and how is the fare calculated?
The cost of a trip corresponds to the standard VOR fare.
Initially, ciao issues VOR single tickets for the distance travelled, regardless of direction.
Once the total cost of single tickets within the same fare zone reaches the price of a day ticket, only the difference up to the day ticket rate is charged.
Any additional journeys within that fare zone on the same day are free of charge.
However, please note that you must still check in before each journey, as otherwise a valid travel authorisation cannot be presented.
What can I do if I was charged an incorrect or higher fare?
If you have any questions regarding your billing, please contact our customer service team at 0800 22 22 20 (Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.) and provide as many details as possible. Our team will be happy to review your request.
What can I do if my payment fails?
If the payment via your credit or debit card fails, ciao will automatically attempt the transaction again. If the amount still cannot be charged, your account will be temporarily suspended for further trips. In this case, please add a new valid credit or debit card. Once the payment has been successfully processed, your account will be reactivated automatically.
How can I obtain a payment receipt?
The payment receipt will be sent to the email address stored in your profile upon completion of the transaction for the day.
How does the “Third-Party Payment” feature work in the ciao app?
The “Third-Party Payment” feature in the ciao app offers a convenient way to share mobility flexibly. It allows you to provide other individuals—such as children, grandparents, or guests—with mobility credit that can be used throughout the entire VOR area.
The provided credit can be used for all trips within the Eastern Region. It is available directly in the app for the authorized person and becomes usable immediately after the supporting person sets the budget. Billing occurs daily in arrears, and the total invoice is issued to the person who provided the credit.
To use this feature, both parties must have a ciao profile. The connection between the accounts can be terminated by either party at any time—even if the budget has not yet been fully used.
Please note: The defined budget limit can be exceeded. For example, if only €1 remains but the next trip costs €10, the additional amount will be charged to the account of the person providing the credit.
How it works:

The receiving person opens the profile section, selects "Third party payment (e.g. parents) under “Payment Methods,” and enters the email address of the supporting person.

A request is then sent, notifying the person who will provide the credit.

This person can accept the request and set an amount that is valid for a custom-defined period.

Once approved, the credit can be used—even without the user’s own payment method.
Tickets and Discounts
How does ticket purchasing work in the ciao app?
A journey with ciao always starts with a check-in and ends with a check-out. A provisional ticket is created during the journey. Once your journey is complete, you will find information about the tickets that have actually been billed under “My tickets.” The current daily price is also displayed here.
Why do I need to select my fare level during the first check-in?
In order to provide you with the correct ticket, we require information about your applicable fare category (such as senior, child under 15, etc.).
How can I link my travel pass to the ciao app?
Customers can add a valid travel pass in the ciao app. The app automatically takes it into account when calculating fares.Travel passes must always be carried in their original form. A travel pass that has been photographed is not considered a valid proof of entitlement during a ticket inspection. Only the physical card or an officially issued digital version is accepted.
Under “Add travel pass manually”, the following passes can currently be added:

*Due to technical limitations, the Wien Regionalverkehr (Vienna Regional Transport) supplement cannot currently be taken into account.
The KlimaTicket Austria cannot be stored in the ciao app.
Can I purchase a ticket in advance?
No. Each trip begins with a check-in and ends with a check-out. ciao only issues the correct ticket after the trip has been completed. Until then, a temporary travel authorization is created.
If ciao has charged a day ticket for a specific route, you must still check in and check out for every subsequent trip on the same day, as otherwise no valid travel authorization can be displayed.
Can I buy first-class tickets?
No, first-class tickets are not available for purchase through ciao.
Can I make a seat reservation on trains?
No, seat reservations cannot be made via ciao.
Can I print my ticket?
No, tickets are provided in digital form only.
Can I purchase a ticket for my dog via ciao?
Dogs can be added in the ciao app during the check-in process. If you hold a registered VOR or Vienna annual pass, or a KlimaTicket, the transport of one dog within the respective validity area is already included. If you are travelling with more than one dog, please add the additional number during check-in. When travelling beyond the validity area of your travel pass, a separate ticket must be purchased for the dog.
Trip Tracking
When do I need to check in and check out?
Check-in takes place at train stations as well as at bus and tram stops before boarding the public transport vehicle. In the case of metro stations, check-in must be completed before passing through the ticket barriers.
Check-out takes place at train stations and at bus or tram stops after leaving the vehicle. For metro stations, check-out may only be carried out after passing through the ticket barriers.
A late check-in or an early check-out means that you do not hold a valid travel authorization. In the event of a ticket inspection, an additional fee will be charged.
What should I do if the correct station is not found during check-in?
At the start of your trip, ciao detects the nearest stop. If the app selects the wrong one, you can choose the correct stop from up to five nearby options.
What happens if my phone stops working or the battery runs out?
In this case, your travel authorization becomes invalid, as the ciao app can no longer be used to record your journey.
Please ensure that your phone has sufficient battery charge before starting your trip so that the ciao app can be used throughout your entire journey.
What happens if I forget to check in before my trip?
In this case, you do not have a valid travel authorization.
Please note that check-in is not possible once the trip has started.
What happens if I forget to check out?
In the event that you forget to check out, ciao will usually register this. After a certain period of time without further activity, the trip will beautomatically terminated in the system.
What should I do if there is an error in trip tracking?

Can I book a trip for multiple passengers?
ciao allows you to include additional passengers in your trip. Simply specify the number of passengers and their respective fare categories (e.g., senior, child under 15, etc.) before checking in.
Please note that accompanying passengers are always charged the regular fare. Passengers who have their own travel passes must install the app on their own smartphones and add their passes in their profiles.
